What is a veterinarian?
A veterinarian is a medical professional who protects the health and well-being of both animals and people. They diagnose and control animal diseases, and treat sick and injured animals. They also advise owners on proper care of their pets and livestock.
Description of Occupation
Veterinarians are trained to provide all aspects of health and welfare programs for animals. This may include consultation in food, animal health and production; treating disease or injury in all animals; performing surgery; and offering advice on all aspects of animal health care. Veterinarians are also involved in food safety, public health, environmental management, and private industry.
Veterinarians may own or work within a private practice, work within government or other agencies, or work within private industry.
License/Registration
In order to practice in Alberta, veterinarians must complete post-secondary education, successfully complete an exam, and be registered with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
