Small-flock poultry health workshops for veterinarians
A growing number of Albertans are raising and producing their own food. As part of this trend, we have seen an increase in urban, and small poultry flocks – and many have been started by new and inexperienced owners. These owners are interested in providing the best care for their birds. Veterinarians and animal health technologists are essential to providing small poultry flocks and owners with advice on husbandry and preventative healthcare.
To support private veterinarians and their animal health technologists in providing services to small poultry flocks, Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is hosting small-flock poultry health workshops, funded by Growing Forward 2. These workshops will provide specific and relevant poultry health information to veterinarians and their registered animal health technologists who currently provide, or are interested in providing services for small flocks. The day long session will cover: poultry necropsy, common poultry diseases, available diagnostics from AF and provincial and federal regulations relating to infectious diseases and preventative. This workshop is scheduled to take place in Lethbridge, Airdrie and Edmonton. The workshop will provide six hours of Continuing Education credits. To register, please use the contact information for each location below. As part of AF mandate to improve availability of veterinary services to small flock poultry producers, the workshops will be offered at no cost to the participant. Speakers include Dr. C. Mainali, Dr. M. Ravi and Dr. H. Keshwani of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Description: Small Animal Surgery Specialist, Dr. Kathy Linn, will share various surgical tips and tricks that she has learned over the years to help general practitioners. This will be a one hour ABVMA CE approved event at the Veterinary Graduates of Western Canada (VGWC) annual hockey tournament, social and CE event in Calgary. It will be at 1:30pm, and includes lunch, at the Aloft Calgary University hotel located at 2359 Banff Trail NW. Calgary, AB T2M 4L2. Please contact Kevin at 403-246-1774 for cost and further details. https://www.hockeyorama.com/
Speaker Biography: Before becoming a surgeon, Dr. Kathy Linn worked in a variety of jobs: She waited tables, milked cows, was a janitor, did medical illustration, worked at Argonne National Laboratory and packed parachutes for other people (no deaths resulted, yay!). She went to Allegheny College in Meadville, PA for a BS degree (how appropriate) and then did vet school at Cornell. She did a small animal internship at Colorado State University (CSU), three years in private practice in Jamestown, New York, and then a surgical residency (and MS degree) at CSU. She worked as a surgeon at Cornell and then University of Wisconsin before coming to University of Saskatchewan in 2003. For fun, she jumps out of perfectly good airplanes, flys less perfectly good airplanes, falls off of horses, and plays hockey poorly.
